Specialist risk management training for the adventure sector
This week we’ve been delighted to finally be able to meet face-to-face with old and new friends from the adventure sector during our open training courses on Monday and Tuesday at Wokingham Waterside Centre.
On Monday we kicked the week off with a bang with our spokesperson training. This saw the delegates learning about the approach to take when speaking to the media on behalf of their adventure organisation in response to a critical incident. They then faced a particularly challenging incident scenario scripted to be specific to the adventure sector. This required delegates to prepare their media statement, their key messages and to draft answers to likely questions before facing the waiting media via Zoom, phone and to-camera onsite. We introduced Zoom interviews into the training as this is now a more likely medium for the media to use post Covid. Best to practice this in a safe environment rather than doing it for the first time for real!
Tuesday was all about safeguarding. We decided to run this session after a number of safeguarding incidents were reported to Pharos over the summer from adventure clients and it seemed that a sector specific training course would be of benefit. Our training always has an immersive element and safeguarding is no different thanks to a couple of brilliant young actors who play out various safeguarding scenarios for the group to establish how they would respond and manage the situation. This element really brings the session to life and drives home the learning. All organisations like those attending who work with young people should be fully up to speed on this vital topic that is so often misunderstood. We’re delighted that this safeguarding session was able to assist with this.
These sessions proved that as always, people who work in the adventure sector are as resourceful, quick thinking, responsive and enthusiastic as ever. This makes them a delight to work with and a pleasure to train.
